A study in found 62 per cent of the women participating had sexual fantasies in which they are forced into having sex against their will. These statistics can make for uncomfortable reading, particularly in the wake of the Me Too movement and the numerous sexual assault scandals that have dominated recent headlines. But, in order to understand ourselves, we must go to where it is uncomfortable. Why are some women regularly fantasising about being forced into having sex?

Rape by its very definition is non-consensual, while a sexual fantasy, no matter how violent it may be, is always under the direction and control of the person having it. It is a terrifying experience precisely because it is not consented to and the victim is disempowered. But, a fantasy is always a safe place, always under your own control and always being consented to.

No matter how extensive your cast list may be, how dramatic the set, or how bizarre the plot, it is impossible not to consent to your own fantasy. So, the first thing that needs to be established is that these are not fantasies about rape, they are about submission and domination. Nor do they mean anyone who has them wants to be raped.

Dr Lori Beth Bisbey is a psychologist and sex intimacy coach who works with individuals and couples. The fantasy is about sex. Actual rape is about power. Making a clear distinction between sexual fantasy and sexual assault is essential. Not only is it deeply insulting, and just plain wrong, to suggest that rape is an erotic experience, but the 62 per cent of women who have these fantasies need to know that any sense of accompanying shame is misplaced.

Dr Leon F. Fantasy does not equate to wish fulfilment. We all have fantasies we would not wish to live out in real life. A type of body-based education that draws on elements of tantra and mindfulness to help people be more present in their bodies.

I asked Meredith Reynoldsa somatic sex educator, about the contradictions many people find in their sexual fantasies. The realm of sexual fantasy commonly carries shame for people because their most potent imaginings may go against their ethics, politics or beliefs, and be the very opposite of what they would want to actually happen. And the ravishment fantasy is nothing if not about desire and conflict. Although this is a common and completely normal fantasy to have, it presents something Curious about what women fantasize a conundrum to psychologists.

Why are so many women fantasising about something that would be horrific and traumatising in real life? Why not fantasise about consensual sex? This theory suggested powerful cultural scripts about being promiscuous have caused many women to experience sexuality and desire as shameful. There is limited evidence to support this. For example, inresearch published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology suggested fantasies about being ravished were more prevalent in women who experienced higher levels of guilt around sex.

However, most studies into fantasies of being ravished do not support this theory. Ina team of psychologists from the University of Texas, led by Jenny M. Curious about what women fantasize far from being symptomatic of guilt around sex, the force fantasy is indicative of someone who enjoys sex and is sexually confident.

I know that sounds daft, but in my fantasy the man is so overcome with lust for me that he just has to have me. The assailant is handsome, the type of man the woman would want to have sex with anyway. This is borne out by research into sexual fantasies. The desire to be desirable is common to such fantasies and one of the most plausible motivations explored in the Bivona research. Which I do, regularly! It is also completely normal for women who have been the victims of sexual violence in real life to continue having or develop ravishment fantasies.

But this is something many women struggle with. She never reported the crime, and sort counselling years later when she suddenly developed insomnia. How could I have been raped if I fantasise about it happening, you know? That really helped me. It made sense. A theme that came up again and again with the women I spoke to was power and control, but not in the way you might imagine. In the fantasy, the woman plays the submissive role, but her fantasy is also about controlling her partner.

All the women I spoke to emphasised that, in the fantasy, they were the powerful one who had reduced the other person to a state where they could not control themselves. Certainly, all the women I spoke too for this article enjoyed their fantasies and their sex lives. To all those reading this who have such fantasies and feel shame around them, I hope you can let that go and give yourself permission to enjoy your fantasy.
